Introduction to Soil Science | Things You Should Know Before Soil Sampling | Soil Sampling

Outline:

Main Objectives of Soil Sampling

Pre-requisites of Soil Sampling

Tools Required/Instruments Used For Soil Sampling

How To Obtain a Soil Sample/Steps in Soil Sampling

Labeling of Obtained Soil Sample

Main Objectives of Soil Sampling:

To check moisture in the soil

To check components or composition of soil

To check the quality of soil according to particle

To check the level of contamination in soil

To check salinity and sodicity of soil

Pre-requisites of Soil Sampling:

An area that is map is needed

History of the land should be present that is either the land was an agricultural land or river etc in the past

GPS locator/meter is also needed

Tools Required/Instruments Used For Soil Sampling:

Soil Auger

Bucket (used for the mixing of samples)

Plastic Bag (to carry 1kg sample from one place to another)

Notebook+Pen (to record location)

How To Obtain a Soil Sample/Steps in Soil Sampling:

In soil sampling, firstly use a soil auger to cut a piece of soil from the land. This should be noted that not only one piece of soil is obtained but you should take many pieces such as five from the area under observation.

After that, take a bucket, put all these five samples (obtained from the portion of land under observation) in it and thoroughly mix them and the sample which is obtained after that is known as a composite sample.

Now take a plastic bag, put 1kg of soil sample in it and bring it to the laboratory for further work on it that is for its analysis. Usually, the analysis should be done after one or two days or after sometime from the time you have obtained a composite sample.

But you cannot leave this plastic bag containing a sample without labeling it in the laboratory for one or two days. So, for labeling, you should keep these things in your mind during the labeling of a sample.

Labeling of Obtained Soil Sample:

Date of sampling

Depth of sampling

Name of sampling (sample collector)

Location

You should have to label these things during labeling. After you have obtained a composite sample, brought it to the laboratory, and labeled it, you should not leave it as it is for one or two days. You should have to dry it first, then grind it or make powder of it and then seve it. Now you can leave it for one or two days or for some time and now you can analyze it whenever you want.

In the end, you do an analysis of soil sample to check moisture in the soil, to check components or composition of the soil, to check the quality of soil according to particle, to check the level of contamination in soil, and to check salinity and sodicity of soil.
