These attractive animals come ashore to Northern Cyprus between May and August for food and Alagadi Beach is considered a special protected area.

During the breeding season the female lays 3-4 nests, each carrying about 100 eggs. will breed every 1-3 years and will always return to the same beaches. There is no definitive estimate for the life span of these sea turtles but it has been suggested that they live to be 160 years old.

There are two species of sea turtles breeding in the North Mediterranean and they can be loggerhead, caretta caretta and green turtle (chelonia mydas). per year. Both species of sea turtles are endangered, especially the green turtles. North Cyprus and Turkey are said to be the only breeding grounds for tortoises. There are more than 80 beaches in Northern Cyprus between May and October and are closely monitored for the work of the precious tortoise.
